England team news: Rooney, Wilshere and Kane among 25-man squad

England interim manager Gareth Southgate has named a 25-man squad that includes Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and Jack Wilshere for upcoming fixtures against Scotland and Spain.

Rooney was memorably benched during the last international break as he struggled to replicate
some of the goalscoring form that saw him bag 53 goals for his country - more than any other striker has scored in an England shirt.

He's shown form of old in the past few days, however. He rifled home a fantastic consolation goal in Manchester United's 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce on Thursday, and on Sunday he assisted both of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goals in their win over Swansea.

Wilshere was left out of Southgate's first squad since replacing sacked Sam Allardyce in October but returns after catching with the eye with respectable Bournemouth performances.

Kane also missed the last squad, albeit through injury, but showed in Sunday's North London derby that he is back fit.
The striker, returning after damaging his ankle ligament on September 18, scored a penalty as
Tottenham held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Other notable inclusions are centre-back Michael Keane, in the midst of fantastic form for Burnley, and winger Andros Townsend, who has been an integral attacker for Crystal Palace this season.

Dele Alli has been left out of the squad due to picking up a knee injury in training, ruling him out until December, though Ross Barkley was overlooked to replace him.

West Ham winger Michail Antonio has also failed to earn a recall after being included in the last England squad.

Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw didn't take part in Manchester United's 3-1 win over Swansea on Sunday, suggesting their absences from England's squad is due to injury.

"Over the last few weeks we've been looking at as many games as possible and keeping track of all of the players," Southgate told the FA's official website.

"There were some players that weren't available to us last time with injury who are in good form that make the frame – the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling. It's good to be able to welcome them back.
"Similarly Harry Kane. We had some good discussions with a lot of the clubs over the past few weeks, and Tottenham have been very helpful in terms of Harry's availability. I'm grateful to Mauricio [Pochettino] for that.
"Of course, Jack Wilshere is a player that we feel has a lot of class and is now starting to get more 90-minutes under his belt. It's good to bring him back into the squad."

First up for Southgate's team is a World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Friday November 11 at Wembley. Four days later they will host 2010 world champions Spain in the same stadium.
Joe Hart is expected to be England's No.1 having left Manchester City and the Premier League for Torino in search of first-team football with great success.

Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy are selected despite struggles for form in 2016-17. Roberto Firmino has been favoured to Sturridge up front for Liverpool this season and Vardy has gone seven Premier League games without a goal.

England: Fraser Forster (Southampton), Hart (Torino), Tom Heaton (Burnley); Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Keane (Burnley), Danny Rose (Tottenham), John Stones (Man City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Eric Dier (Tottenham); Danny Drinkwater (Leicester), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Wilshere (Bournemouth), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Man Utd), Rooney (Man Utd), Raheem Sterling (Man City), Townsend (Crystal Palace); Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Jamie Vardy (Leicester).
