Flamboyant Defender Izu Joseph Shot Dead In Oil-Rich Bayelsa State

The organization of Shooting Stars FC has been throw into mourning after losing one of its players Izu Joseph to a stray bullet on Sunday in oil-rich Bayelsa state.

The deceased defender was part of the team that finished 14th in the just concluded 2015/2016 NPFL season.

Confirming the news on its official twitter account, the club wrote:

"A shooting STAR is gone! Izu Joseph is gone! Flamboyant defender is gone! RIP, brother. What a life! May God strengthen his family #Tragedy."

Shock and anger have trailed the death of the defender with reports suggesting the player died as a result of being hit by a stray-bullet as officers of the Joint Task Force engaged militants of the restive Niger Delta in a long-drawn face-off on Sunday, October 16.

Former Nigeria U20 coach John Obuh expressing shock towards the defender's untimely death has called for investigation to the death of the player.

Our police should investigate this incident,” he said.

“What is all this? Can’t a good thing ever come out of our land? Every time comes one sad story or the other.”

The coach would not be the only one to call for action with the Oyo State Sports Writers Association (SWAN) urging improvement in security across all levels.

“We commiserate with the management of 3SCover the death of their reliable and committed player, Izu Joseph, who was full of life and contributed immensely to the escape of ‘The Oluyole Warriors’ from relegation in the just concluded Nigeria league,” read the statement in part.
“It is indeed a great loss not only to 3SC, but also to the football fraternity in Nigeria... The Oyo SWAN appeals to government at all levels to beef up security in all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to prevent the recurrence of the avoidable incident that claimed the life of our valuable footballer, Izu Joseph.”

Izu joined the Ibadan outfit two seasons ago from Bayelsa United when the Oluyole Warriors were still plying their trade in the second-tier Nigeria National League, NNL.
