Thegoalmac has learned that Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos
says the current side are intent on going down in history as one of the
greatest ever, and insists their mission begins with Saturday’s Club
World Cup final against San Lorenzo.
"I hope we can go down in history," he said.
"Defining an era
will come down to statistics, records and trophies. We're all happy with
the coach and on Saturday we'll try to win another trophy.
"Playing
in a final is always an extra source of motivation. We're enjoying a
unique time and as a footballer I feel privileged. Real Madrid is a team
supported everywhere and we have to reward our fans for that by
winning."
Ramos also leapt to the defence of colleague Pepe, who their Argentine opponents singled out as something of an aggressor.
"Everyone
is entitled to have their own opinion, but it's a privilege having him
by my side because he is one of the top three central defenders in the
world.
"Football is for people who are tough and he's one of them. He's at a high level."
Three-time
world champions Real Madid have faced Argentinian opposition just once
before in this competition, when a Juan Roman Riquelme-inspired Boca
Juniors won 2-1 thanks to a Martin Palermo double in Tokyo in 2000.
Ramos was a doubt for Saturday's clash with a thigh injury but now looks set to retain his pace in the starting line-up.
