Thegoalmac understands that Real Madrid icon Santillana believes Cristiano Ronaldo is a greater goalscorer than Raul and that it will be many years before we see another player like the Portuguese.
Do you agree with Mr Santillana? Continue for what he said.
Ronaldo has netted in his last 12 outings in all competitions for the
Blancos, taking his overall record for the club to 274 goals in just 261
games.
"You can't say that Ronaldo is better than Raul," Santillana told reporters "But he's more of a goalscorer, I've no doubt about that.
"Cristiano scores two or three goals every game. Indeed, when he scores just one goal, it's as if he's done nothing!
"With his age and the qualities that he has, Cristiano will continue
to provide Real Madrid with many more years of glory. Hopefully, he
stays here!
"But don't forget, Raul in his day was a great player. So, it's not
as if you can say who is the best of all time or who was the better
player from two different eras."
Ronaldo, of course, is just one strike away from equalling Raul's all-time Champions League record of 71 goals.
However, Santillana argues that those numbers are misleading, given
Alfredo Di Stefano, who inspired Madrid to five successive European Cup
triumphs, is only eighth on that particular list.
"Even when I played the European Cup, you only faced champions and
the ties were two-legged, with no margin for error, so you cannot
compare," he reasoned.
"And besides, look at the stats: where is Di Stefano?! He's not there
[at the top] because they played fewer games and, if you finished
second, you didn't get to play in the European Cup.
"So all of that affects comparisons.
"However, what the stats do not influence is the fact that Ronaldo
has characteristics that will be very difficult to replicate in football
for many years."
Santillana represented Madrid for a staggering 17 seasons, netting 186 times in 461 appearances for the capital club.
