I fear drone bombings in football, says Platini

Thegoalmac can reveal that Michel Platini has disclosed his fears that drones carrying bombs could cause carnage in football matches in the future.

Serbia's Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday at home to Albania descended into chaos when a drone stoked political tensions between the Balkan nations by flying a pro-Albanian flag on to the pitch just before half-time.

Referee Martin Atkinson was forced to suspend the game when the two sides became embroiled in a scrap in the middle of the Belgrade pitch between players, staff and even fans.

The furore resulted in the abandonment of the match because Albania's football federation feared for the safety of their team after they were pelted with projectiles as they fled the pitch in the aftermath of the brawl in Serbia.

The Uefa president had already branded the incident "inexcusable" but has added to previous comments, suggesting that matches between teams with tensions that go beyond football rivalry could become extremely hazardous without sufficient safety.

"We opened an investigation. We will wait for the reports from Belgrade, but just imagine that the drone had carried a bomb instead of a flag," Platini told TF1 . "What would we do then?

"We must be careful, as everything is becoming dangerous, especially in the regions where there are a lot of political tensions, such as this one."

After the game, Chelsea and Serbia defender Branislav Ivanovic admitted he could not understand the events that had just unfolded, while Albania captain Lorik Cana blamed home supporters for the abandonment.
