It comes as a shot in the arm for Italian football, with the country
having previously bid for the 2016 European Championships but missed out
to France.
Uefa has also announced that Basel’s St Jakob Park has been selected
to host the Uefa Europa League final for 2015-16. The stadium held six
matches at Euro 2008, including Germany’s semi-final win over Turkey.
The Europa League final will be held on May 18, 2016, with the Champions League final coming 10 days later.
This season’s Champions League and Europa League finals take place in Berlin and Warsaw, respectively.
