The Super Falcons of Nigeria may yet again miss out on the women’s football event of the Olympics as they could only manage a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday in the race for places at Rio 2016.
Halimat Ayinde put the reigning African champions in front in the 25th minute but the Falcons failed to build on their advantage as they wasted the chances that came their way.
The floundered chances by the Nigeria women was to later haunt them just after the hour-mark when Chinasa Okoro; one of the naturalized Nigerian players in the Equatorial Guinea team capitalised on a defensive error to level proceedings for the visitors and also give her side the vital away goal which now gives them some level of advantage ahead of the return leg which comes up two-weeks later, August 2 in Bata.
The Nigeria women who missed out at the London Olympics would need to really up their game if they are to compete in Rio as the Equatorial Guinea ladies are near invincible at home.
