Mascherano denies Argentina retirement rumours

Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has denied rumours he could retire from Argentina duty.

The Albiceleste lost their second major final in 12 months after being beaten by Chile on penalties in the Copa America final, a year on from their World Cup defeat to Germany.

That prompted rumours that Lionel Messi could either retire or take a break from the international scene but Mascherano has no such intentions.

"I just want to clarify that everything that has been speculated about my future with Argentina is a lie," he said in a note on his Twitter account.

"It's all very fresh and very painful to make decisions. As I've always said in my career, when I have to something to say, I'll say it.

"Anyone else who speaks my name shouldn't be taken into account. I'd have liked not to have to deny anything. But I feel obliged to do it so there's no confusion."

Mascherano has won 117 caps for his country since making his debut back in 2003, representing his country in four Copa Americas, three World Cups and winning Olympic Gold in 2004 and 2008.
