South Africa took full advantage of a slice of good fortune to beat Senegal 2-1 in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday afternoon.
Two goals in the space of four first-half minutes by the hosts sealing their place atop group D with Bafana Bafana finally bringing an end to their barren run on home soil.
Thulani Hlatswhayo puts Bafana Bafana ahead from the spot two minutes from the break, while Thulani Serero doubled the advantage on the dot of half time.
The visitors upped the ante after the break and got a lifeline when Cheikh N'Doye scrambled the ball home in the 76th minute.
The Teranga Lions were however unable to find the equalizer in the remaining parts of the game and have now lost their first game in the group.
South Africa who drew 1-1 against Burkina Faso in their opening fixture in the group now occupy top position with four points. Senegal now sit in second place with three points.
At the Nelson Mandela Stadium, Kampala, Uganda also beat Congo 1-0 to shot to top position in Group E. Farouk Miya scored the winning goal on 18 minutes.

Zambia earned their first point in the African zone of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers following a hard earned 1-1 draw against hosts Cameroon in Limbe on Saturday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Collins Mbesuma opened scoring for the Chipolopolo in the 34th minute with an assist from captain, Rainford Kàlàba.
It was Mbesuma's second goal in the qualifiers. Vincent Àboubacar equalised for Cameroon from the spot with the last kick of the first half.
Cameroon have now garnered two points from their first two games and are still searching for their first win.
