Arsene Wenger has mistakenly congratulated Mesut Ozil on his non-existent Ballon d'Or nomination.
France Football announced their 30-man shortlist for the annual prize this week, with both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez missing as the Premier League boasted eight representatives.
Premier League title-winning duo Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were joined by Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Dimitri Payet and Hugo Lloris.
"It's a big satisfaction for him and us as well, but I'm against it," Wenger replied when asked by an equally confused reporter about Ozil's nod.
Wenger is a vocal critic of the award, preferring team honours over individual recognition in football, and repeated those concerns on Friday.
The Frenchman also suggested that certain players are obsessed by winning the prize, which Cristiano Ronaldo is favourite to land in January.
"It gets in the head of players, you see people think only of themselves because they are obsessed by the Ballon d'Or and not the team.
"Football is a collective sport. We want to respect what it's about, which is the team effort.
"I encourage and congratulate the players who do well but when you look at the history, you don't think it's always been the most objective decision. We know all about the players who are the best."
