Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham: Sturridge double sinks Spurs

Daniel Sturridge scored both goals as Liverpool overcame Premier League rivals Tottenham 2-1 at Anfield on Tuesday to seal a place in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Sturridge turned in a loose ball inside the area to break the deadlock in the ninth minute before converting a one-on-one opportunity in the second half to double both his and Liverpool's tally.

His second brace in this season's competition - he also scored twice in a 5-0 victory at Burton Albion in the second round - settled an all-Premier League affair that pitted the League Cup's last two losing finalists.

Vincent Janssen converted a 76th-minute penalty to halve the deficit but Tottenham's unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end at eight games.

Managers Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino used the fixture to demonstrate the art of rotation, the pair combining to make 21 changes from their respective line-ups that started in league action at the weekend.
