In what will be his last season as a professional footballer, it seems only fitting that Francesco Totti was able to reach a notable career landmark on Thursday night.
The Roma stalwart, in his 25th campaign at Stadio Olimpico, made his 100th appearance in European competition as the Giallorossi were held to a 3-3 draw by Austria Wien.
Two late goals from the visitors to the Italian capital spoiled the sense of occasion for Totti, but no-one can take away the sense of achievement he should feel and having hit such a milestone.
And what better way for those who have followed the career of a modern-day football icon to celebrate such an occasion than to mock Totti up as a Roman gladiator.
Roma are unlikely to see another of his kind again – a one-club man with over 760 senior outings to his name.
He will, however, be taking up a technical director post at the end of the season, so this is by no means a footnote in the final chapter of the Francesco Totti story, it is merely another addition to a truly remarkable tale.
