Michael Carrick must partner Paul Pogba in midfield as he is the closest Manchester United have to Andrea Pirlo, says Owen Hargreaves.
The world's most expensive player has struggled to replicate the form that convinced Jose Mourinho to part with £89 million to bring him back to Old Trafford after four years away.
However, Pogba started alongside Carrick for the first time this season on Thursday, scoring twice as United beat Fenerbahce in the Europa League, and Hargreaves feels their partnership is most effective.
"The player closest to Pirlo is Carrick that he had at Juventus when he was at his best," the former Man Utd midfielder told BT Sport.
"I think Mounrinho is trying to find his best partner, and I think Carrick should play in this team."
Man Utd are back in action on Sunday with a visit to Premier League title rivals Chelsea, with kick-off at 16:00 UK time.
