NPFL Week 37 Recap: Rangers Edge Close To Winning The League Title; MFM Face Drop

Enugu Rangers moved closer to ending their 32-year title drought following a 2-1 win againstIkorodu United at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta on Sunday.

The Flying Antelopes now top the standings with 60 points and now need a point from their last fixture of the season against El-Kanemi Warriors in Enugu to win the title.

Former Flying Eagles midfielder Obinna Nwobodo put the visitors ahead with a potential goal of the season in the 25th minute. Obinna unleashed a ferocious shot from outside area which sailed into the net for his seventh goal of the campaign.


He turned provider later as his inch perfect cross was diverted into the net by Chisom Egbuchulam in the 38th minute. It was the winger’s 11th goal of the season. Paul Duke pulled a goal back for Ikorodu United in added time.

Elsewhere, Rivers United’s title bid suffered a hitch after they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by relegation battlers Abia WarriorsThe Pride of Rivers remain in second position and will need to win their last fixture away to Akwa United and Rangers losing theirs to win the title.

In Nnewi, FC IfeanyiUbah beat Oriental rivals Enyimba 1-0 to move into second position in the table. The home side took an early lead with Isaac Loute scoring the opener on three minutes and defended it for the rest of the game.

At the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan Shooting Stars secured their safety and ended Wikki Tourists’ title ambitions with a 1-0 win. Olabisi Samuel headed in the winner for the Oluyole Warlords nine minutes after the restart.

Nasarawa United and Akwa United battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Aper Aku Stadium. The away side went ahead in the 13th minute after Esosa Igbinoba converted from the spot, while Hassan Babangida equalized for the away side with a sweet volley in the 23rd minute.

The Promise Keepers went ahead three minutes later after Cyril Olisema tapped in Ikpe Micheal’s cross. The home side grabbed the leveller at the death.

Sunshine Stars compounded Warri Wolves’ relegation worries by beating the Seasiders 1-0 in Akure with Dayo Ojo scoring the decisive goal in the 62nd minute.

In another fixture, Niger Tornadoes beat MFM FC 3-1 in Lokoja. Solomon Owello gave Tornadoes the perfect start when he converted from the spot as early as the fourth minute. Owello scored his side’s second of the game in the 27th minute. Gabriel Wassa fired in the third goal for his side five minutes after the break.

The away side pulled a goal back 15 minutes from time through Stephen Odey.

Heartland boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win against Kano Pillars at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri. Emeka Ogbugh scored the winning goal 25 minutes from time.

El-Kanemi Warriors beat Plateau United 1-0 in Maiduguri with Hussaini Mohammed scoring the winner from the spot in the 58th minute.
