'Bullet' Aubameyang would be a good fit at Real Madrid - Merino

Borussia Dortmund defender Mikel Merino believes team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is tailor-made for Real Madrid.

Aubameyang, who is recognised as one of the best strikers in the world, was strongly linked with a big-money summer move to the European champions.

And ahead of Dortmund's meeting with Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, Merino believes the 27-year-old has the right qualities to flourish at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Speaking exclusively to Goal, Merino said: “Aubameyang is a bullet! I knew it [before I was converted into a defender], but when you have to defend against him as centre-back, you can feel it much more.

“Not just because of his speed, but also for his good movements and his finishing. He's a top player. Would he fit at Real Madrid? The strikers there need to score and make a difference. He does it.

“He would fit, of course. He is doing what Real Madrid ask to their strikers. I don't know why he couldn't play there.”

Dortmund got their group stage campaign off to the perfect start with a 6-0 thrashing of Legia Warsaw in their opening fixture.

Thomas Tuchel's men have since followed that victory up with three successive wins in the Bundesliga, scoring 14 goals in the process.

Merino believes such prowess in front of goal means BVB stand a good chance of getting a positive result against Madrid at Signal Iduna Park, but believes his side must maintain full focus in order to beat them.

“Borussia Dortmund are in a good moment, yes, maybe the best in recent times,” he added. “We have scored a lot of goals in the last few games.

“We want to win from the beginning with a strong start. Real Madrid is one of the biggest teams in the world, they know perfectly this competition and you can't relax against them.”
