Liverpool fans organise ‘Rodgers out, Rafa in’ banner fly-by

Liverpool’s Premier League clash with QPR on Saturday has been overshadowed by an aeroplane banner calling for Brendan Rodgers to be sacked.

The message, reading ‘Rodgers out, Rafa in’, soared over Anfield at kick-off and increases the pressure facing the Northern Irish coach after he became the first manager since the 1950s to go three season without winning a trophy at the club.

The scenes, reminiscent of the fly-by protest aimed at then Manchester United boss David Moyes a year ago, are believed to be the work of disgruntled Liverpool fans, with a Twitter account named ‘@RodgersOutClub’ taking responsibility for the stunt.

“We are a group of lifelong Liverpool fans who have had enough of Brendan Rodgers,” the account tweeted. “We will not be silenced or ignored until he is gone. Fact.”

An earlier tweet read: “A massive thank you to all of the Liverpool fans who contributed for the plane and banner. Together we will achieve our goal. #RodgersOut”

The protest marks an incredible turnaround in the popularity of Rodgers, who was fighting for the title this time last season.

The Merseysiders were two points clear at the top of the table after 34 matches in the 2013-14 season, but, at the same stage this season, lie outside the top four and look set to miss out on the Champions League.

Rafa Benitez, meanwhile, has been urged to return to the club he left in 2010 by the fan group, with the Spaniard set to leave Napoli at the end of the season despite making the semi-finals of the Europa League.
