The 26-year-old, who is on loan with Carlo Ancelotti's side having been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, missed a host of chances over the 90 minutes after being given the nod to start the crucial quarter-final second leg.
But the Mexico international's persistence was duly rewarded as he popped up to tap home Cristiano Ronaldo's lay-off to send Madrid through to the last four where they will face either Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Juventus.
And Rooney, along with United team-mate Michael Carrick, was quick to praise his old strike partner, taking to Twitter to pass on his congratulations as Chicharito scored his sixth goal of the season for the Madrid giants.
