Chelsea receive the most abusive posts on social media, according to a study by Kick It Out.
The anti-discrimination group's research, which was conducted by social
media management agency Tempero and Brandwatch, found that an estimated
134,400 negative posts were sent this season alone, which equated to
one mention every 2.6 minutes.
The Premier League leaders were
subjected to abuse 20,000 times during August, 2014, and March, 2015;
beating second-placed Liverpool by 1,000.
Kick It Out also
revealed that Mario Balotelli is the most targeted Premier League player
with 8,000 instances of football-related hate crime - 52 per cent of
posts being racially abusive - with second-placed Danny Welbeck and
third-placed Daniel Sturridge trailing by some distance with 1,700 and
1,600 respectively.
The most targeted game for abuse this season was the League Cup
semi-final second leg between Chelsea and Liverpool, with the Reds and
Manchester United featuring four times each in the top-eight busiest
matches.
Of all abuse online directed towards football, Kick It
Out found that 28% were based on race, 25% on gender and 19% on sexual
orientation, with 88% stemming from Twitter alone.
In response, Kick It Out are aiming to form an expert group to assess ways to tackle online abuse across all social media.
