Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has defended Cristiano Ronaldo
in the wake of their 2-0 La Liga win over Levante on Sunday, stressing
that it is not easy for the Portugal international to deal with the
immense pressure on his shoulders.
The 30-year-old failed to add his name to the score-sheet at the
Santiago Bernabeu, with Gareth Bale netting both of Madrid's goals, and Ronaldo received his fair share of criticism after the game for his cold reaction to the Welshman's strikes.
Nevertheless, Sergio Ramos has insisted that Madrid are not worried
about this weekend's events, adding that Ronaldo deserves recognition
for everything he adds to the team.
"It is difficult to be Cristiano and he has been performing at a very
high level for a number of years," the defender told the official
Madrid website.
"He knows himself better than anyone, he has a very competitive
character and we are not worried if he didn't score if Bale subsequently
did.
"We have to appreciate what he brings to the team."
Sergio Ramos then went on to stress that there's no reason to panic
for Madrid following their disappointing form in recent weeks as he
feels they still have every chance of winning La Liga and Champions
League.
"We must be more united than ever. It was a difficult game following
the run of form that we have had and the level of pressure that is
placed on Real Madrid, which is more than at any other team. We have to
accept that, but I don't think that this is a troubling period.
"There are two months of top level competition left, we have one
point less than the leaders and are in the quarter-finals of the
Champions League, which is a tournament that is exciting us again."
The defender also had his say on the position of head coach Carlo
Ancelotti and made it clear that the Italian still has the team's full
support.
"Ancelotti is doing well. He has gone through a difficult situation
but if anyone deserves respect, it is Ancelotti, especially after last
season."
