Now, the question I have got for you guys is, whose fault could it be, Mourinho or the club? Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs believes Chelsea regret selling Kevin De Bruyne and feels the club could lose him if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.
The 23-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge from Genk in 2012 but after an
impressive spell on loan at Werder Bremen, he struggled to secure a
regular first-team place under Jose Mourinho.
After just nine
first-team appearances for Chelsea, De Bruyne completed his switch to
Wolfsburg in January 2014 for over €20 million and Allofs claims the
Belgium international is still being closely monitored by his former
club.
"At Chelsea they watch how Kevin has developed with appreciation," Allofs told Kicker.
"They've seen it confirmed, why they were reluctant to let him leave."
Wolfsburg currently sit second in the Bundesliga, eight points behind
leaders Bayern Munich, and Allofs is adamant that securing a Champions
League place for next season will be vital in being able to keep hold of
De Bruyne.
"Kevin will be leaving if we do not qualify for the
Champions League come the end of this season or afterwards. All those
other clubs are not blind to see," Allofs continued.
"Anyway,
they would definitely have to dig very deep into their pockets. That's
why most of them are definitely without a chance to sign him."
