The Red Devils unsurprisingly had the best of possession against the League One team but struggled to make it count in the first half, with Louis van Gaal making two changes at the break in order to gee up the visitors.
Ander Herrera's excellent goal got them going, however, shooting on the turn into the top corner to leave goalkeeper Jed Steer no chance in the 64th minute.
Angel Di Maria then broke away at the death, making a long sprint before dinking the ball over Steer to seal progression.
