Andros Townsend's second-half penalty gave Tottenham a 1-0 home win in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final against Sheffield United.
Spurs
were made to work hard at White Hart Lane, dominating possession but
struggling to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined Blades
side, particularly before the break.
But a clear handball from
defender Jay McEveley as he tried to hold off substitute Roberto Soldado
saw a spot kick awarded in the 74th minute, which Townsend coolly
converted to give Mauricio Pochettino's men an advantage heading into
the return at Bramall Lane.
The standout pre-match team news
revolved around Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor, handed his first
start since the beginning of November following a spell of compassionate
leave back in Africa and even given the responsibility of being captain
for the night.
