Thegoalmac understands that Carlo Ancelotti argued that Real Madrid did not deserve to lose at Valencia on Sunday night, arguing that his side had created enough chances to have got something out of the game.

The reigning European champions had been expected to extend their 22-match winning streak in all competitions with a victory at Mestalla and they took the lead just 14 minutes in thanks to a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, second-half goals from Antonio Barragan and Nicolas Otamendi earned Valencia a surprise win and left Ancelotti feeling short-changed.

"We played a good match and didn't deserve to lose," the Italian told reporters afterwards. "But, in football, anything can happen.

"It's a defeat which we eventually had to suffer, but let's not forget what we've achieved already.
"Congratulations to Valencia - they fought hard. But we worked well and we created chances. There is nothing else to say."

The loss at Mestalla was Madrid's first since they were beaten 2-1 by Atletico in a Liga clash at the Santiago Bernabeu in September and they face their city rivals again on Wednesday, albeit this time in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.

The Blancos face another crucial Primera Division clash at home to Espanyol on Saturday, but Ancelotti insists that he will resist the temptation to rest his key men for the short trip to the Vicente Calderon.

"We have to put the best possible team out to win on Wednesday," he added.

"Physically, the team have been good. The season is long and we're well positioned.
"The defeat doesn't affect us. We'll put what we've done so well behind us."
