Thegoalmac can reveal that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said Michael Carrick has usurped Darren Fletcher as the club's vice-captain.
Van
Gaal named Wayne Rooney as skipper ahead of the current Premier League
season, with Fletcher as No.2 as he continues his recovery from
ulcerative colitis.
Carrick missed the first nine matches of the
campaign through injury but United have won six of the seven games he
has played since his return to the line-up, while Fletcher has managed
just 23 minutes since September 17.
During his press conference
on Friday, Van Gaal twice referred to Carrick as "my captain", before
the club's press officer interjected.
“He is my captain so he
brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure,” Van Gaal said.
“I can use him in different positions and I like that. Because he is my
captain he can transfer my philosophy on the pitch.”
After being
corrected, he continued: “Next to Rooney he is my captain. Fletcher is
also my captain. I have three captains but of course there is a
sequence. Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher is three. In different
lines of my team I have captains and that is very important. Maybe,
that contribution is a big one.”
But the Dutchman does not
believe that Carrick's return to action has been directly responsible
for their six-match winning streak.
“I think you give too much honour to Michael Carrick," he suggested.
