Vicente del Bosque believes some people had irreparably made their mind up about Iker Casillas' career having jumped the shark before Spain's loss to Slovakia.
For me,he should have been benched for a younger De Gea after the world cup Spain had,and i also think Casillas should join the likes of Xavi and Xabi Alonso to retire. What do you guys think?Continue to see what Mr Del Bosque said.
"I thought there could be a smooth transition in Spain’s goal. Now it
seems impossible…so be it," the 63-year-old told reporters.
"It’s impossible in a civilised country to change a goalkeeper for one mistake.
"Some people are taking advantage and had already decided which
goalkeeper should play against Luxembourg regardless of what happened on
Thursday.
"We’ll see if De Gea or another goalkeeper plays. Whoever plays will deserve it. It’s a difficult issue."
Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas also defended his fellow national team star
and admits the reigning European champions have buried their head in the
proverbial sand to avoid hearing criticism since their summer World Cup
debacle.
"We know Iker and there’s not much to say," the Chelsea midfielder
said. "The Madrid press know him. He’s strong and dedicated 100 per cent
to his team.
"He’s a great team-mate and a great captain. There’s no need to over-dramatise things.
"He’s experienced enough to know that everything isn’t too good or
too bad. He’s calm and we all know we could have played better.
"In difficult times we have to insulate ourselves from what is said
on television. We’re not interested at any time and now we have to be
more united than ever.
"What these people say is the opposite of what we need. We’ve played three games after the World Cup but it feels like 20."
