President of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Issa Hayatou
has called for "exemplary sanctions" to be taken after JS Kabylie
striker Albert Ebosse was killed by a missile thrown from the crowd on Saturday.....Continue to see what he said...
Ebosse was struck by a stone after leaving the field at the end of his side's 2-1 defeat to USM Alger - in which he scored - before being rushed to hospital in Tizi Ouzou, where he later died.
Hayatou
has condemned the perpetrators and called for African football to
retain a zero tolerance policy towards violence and hooliganism in its
sporting arenas.
"My thoughts go out to the family and friends of
this young man, who enjoyed his job peacefully and went further to
pursue his passion for football abroad," Hayatou said in a statement at
the CAF headquarters in Cairo.
"African football cannot be the
breeding ground for hooliganism whatsoever. We expect exemplary
sanctions to be taken against this grave act of violence. Violence has
no place in African football in particular and sport in general. We
remain resolute and state in the strongest terms our determination to
eradicate all forms of violence and unsportsmanlike conduct in stadiums
on the continent. "
Ebosse, who was 24, was the leading scorer in the latest Algerian championship.
The
forward, who won six senior caps for cameroon in his career, had
previously played for hometown club Douala and Perak in Malaysia.
