Playing at home, El-Arbi Hilal put Algeria in front in the seventh minute. Benjamin Moukandjo cancelled out Hilal's early strike in the 24th minute, levelling up for Cameroon.
In the second half both teams went in search of the winning goal but couldn't break each other down.
With the draw, both Algeria and Cameroon have a point each and are behind leaders the Super Eagles of Nigeria while Zambia are bottom in the group.
Algeria will be guests of the Super Eagles on matchday 2 in November and Cameroon will be at home to Zambia also on the 12th of November.

After a goalless first half, Tunisia finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute through Aymen Abdennour. In the 80th minute, Ahmed Akaichi got on the score sheet to make it 2-0 in favour of the Carthage Eagles.
Tunisia are now second in Group A behind Democratic Republic of Congo who thumped Libya 4-0 in Saturday's qualifying game.
In the next round of qualifiers in November 2016, Tunisia will be guests to Libya while Guinea will host DR Congo.
