The Premier League is finally around the corner and while it has not been a dull summer for football fans, nothing compares to the joy the English Premier League brings to us. The curtain raiser- the Community Shield has been played and in 5 days the Premier League officially kicks off.
To this, we have decided to put together interesting changes and details going into the new season.
The 2016/2017 Premier League season will be known simply as the Premier League without any sponsors attached. Previously, the league went by the name “Barclays Premier League.” Also as part of the rebranding, a new logo was also introduced. Barclays, however, still remains an official sponsor of the league.
The season starts on 13th of August, 2016 with Leicester City taking on Hull City. Hull City, Middlesbrough, and Burnley are the promoted teams from the 2015/2016 Championship. The league would be without Newcastle United, Norwich City and Aston Villa after they got relegated from the previous season.
On the managerial end, few changes have happened as well.
Jose Mourinho replaces Louis van Gaal at Man Utd, Ronald Koeman took over the reins from Roberto Martinez at Everton with Claude Peul replacing the Dutchman at Southampton. Also, former Italian Head Coach Antonio Conte is the new boss at Chelsea with Guus Hiddink’s caretaking spell having come to an end.
Old rivalries would be restored with Pep Guardiola taking over at Man City- a game against
Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd to look out for. Walter Mazzarri is the new manager at Watford and former Man Utd gaffer David Moyes is with Sunderland after former Black Cats’ boss took the England job. Hull City are still without a man but it is rumored former Man Utd assistant manager Mike Phelan would take over.
‘Can Messi deliver on a wet Wednesday night at Bet365?’ might sound strange as Stoke City announced their stadium would no longer be called Britannia but Bet365 Stadium. Also, West Ham would be playing their games at the Olympic Stadium which seats about 60,000 people, moving them to the top 5 largest stadiums in the Premier League.
About 50 Africans currently play in the league with one-fifth of those coming from Nigeria.
Alan Shearer and Ryan Giggs lead the Premier League in goals scored and appearances made respectively.
