Brazil coach Tite has expressed his sympathy for Lionel Messi, labelling penalty shootouts “inhumane”.
Argentina captain Messi missed from the spot in his side’s penalty shootout defeat against Chile in the final of the Copa America Centenario on Sunday and has since announced his international retirement.
And Tite, who spent the week since his appointment in USA casting an eye over Brazil’s upcoming competitors in World Cup qualifying, says he would like to see a new system for deciding matches.
“In my opinion it is inhuman to decide games via penalties,” Tite told Sportv.
“I would have to create another kind of decider.
“Of course they are about technical quality, mental strength, but it could be in another way. I don´t know how, but it not fair to tarnish an important player who is unlucky and ends up missing.”
Tite and Brazil’s new technical coordinator Edu Gaspar were in attendance in New Jersey to see Chile retain the Copa America title and praised Juan Antonio Pizzi’s side as the best team on the continent, insisting they have a formula greater than the sum of its parts.
“Chile are a strong side and are able enhance their individuals together,” he said. “They are the best collective in South America."
