The midfielder, who has spent over nine years at Stamford Bridge, has notched just once in the Premier League for Chelsea and has four goals for his national team.
But that didn't stop him from stepping up as the Super Eagles prepared for the second leg of their second round 2018 World Cup qualifying game against Swaziland in Port Harcourt.
There were varying degrees of success for the players and Mikel even struggled to score from 12 yards, missing twice before beating Carl Ikeme to loud ironic cheers from those around him.
Ikeme and Ikechukwu Ezenwa rotated in trying to keep out the shots as Efe Ambrose, Elderson Echiejile, Moses Simon, Ahmed Musa and Sylvester Igbonu all also took spot kicks.
