Hamburg 3-1 Borussia Dortmund: Visitors humiliated in hammering

An own-goal from Mats Hummels summed up a miserable night for Borussia Dortmund as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Hamburg.

Thomas Tuchel's men had the opportunity to reduce the gap with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to two points, but were left behind at the races thanks to a dreadful defensive showing.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga opened the scoring with a penalty in the 19th minute after Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Bürki clumsily felled Ivo Ilicevic inside the box.
Hamburg then capitalised on a terrible back-pass, with Lewis Holtby bursting into the box and doubling the hosts' advantage before the break.

Hummels nodded into his own net from a corner to effectively end the tie as a contest, even if Hamburg custodian Rene Adler was instrumental in keeping the visitors at bay with several fine saves.

Bundesliga top-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did pull one back for his side in the closing stages, but it proved too little, too late for the aspiring title challengers.

BVB had come into the game on the back of four straight league victories, but the surprise loss – only their second of the season in the top flight – means Bayern now have the chance to move eight points clear when they play at Schalke on Saturday.
