Hehe, One Direction are the sole reason for Manchester United’s stuttering performance against Club America, according to Louis van Gaal.
Morgan Schneiderlin’s header gave United a 1-0 victory in the United States, but Van Gaal has criticised the pop foursome for ruining the CenturyLink Field playing surface.
Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson belted out their vast array of hits in Seattle 48 hours prior to United’s match, with adoring fans dancing and singing along.
And Van Gaal has taken the bold step of criticising the decision to allow the band to play on the same ground as the Red Devils.
“The pitch was not good,” said Van Gaal. “It was difficult.
“The first surface was artificial and it had grass over it. It was always moving. It's not easy. You can get injuries. It's a big concern. It was like that last season against Real Madrid in Michigan. It's like this in the USA. These pitches are used for different things.
“Old Trafford is used for football only, not One Direction concerts. Here it's used for entertainment things. The facilities generally are fantastic. They could not be better.
“We have been received very well by Seattle Seahawks and the football club. Everyone is fantastic. But we have to play football on such a pitch. We could not do that and that's important.”
Of course, Van Gaal is a much more of a jazz fan, as displayed when he infamously called on the audience at United's Player of the Year awards to show a female saxophonist the appreciation she apparently deserved.
His anger at One Direction's concert, however, may well have hit his chances of taking over from the departed Zayn Malik as the band's fifth member. One Direction to blame for poor Man United display
