Cristiano Ronaldo netted twice to become the all-time
leading goalscorer in European competition but Carlo Ancelotti's men
only scraped through to the last eight.
Real Madrid sneaked into the last eight of the Champions League despite suffering a 4-3 defeat at home to a sensational Schalke side on Tuesday.
Schalke twice led during the first half, first through Christian Fuch and then Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but they were pegged back on both occasions by Cristiano Ronaldo, who became the all-time leading goalscorer in European competition with the first of his two headers.
Karim Benzema looked to have settled the tie in favour of Madrid, who triumphed 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen three weeks ago, but Schalke levelled matters with a fine strike from teenager Leroy Sane before taking the lead on the night courtesy of an emphatic finish from Huntelaar.
The Dutchman's goal left the visitors needing just one more goal to dump Madrid out of the competition but Iker Casillas, who was at fault for at least two of Schalke's goals, kept them at bay to keep the reigning champions' hopes of defending their title alive.
