Lionel Messi has sent a message of support to former Argentina international colleague Jonas Gutierrez.
Newcastle midfielder Jonas was diagnosed with cancer last year and
returned to the pitch this past weekend against Manchester United, just
five months after completing a course of chemotherapy.
And Barcelona star Messi took to Facebook to express his delight at the 31-year-old’s return to the game.
How amazing it is to see you on the pitch again, Jonás! Said Messi.
Jonas, 31, was immediately handed the captain’s armband by Fabricio
Coloccini as he walked onto the St James’ pitch to appear for his club
for the first time since October 2013.
“All football fans send messages of support. I was very pleased to receive them all. Messages from Sunderland fans,” said Jonas.
“Derbies are hard in the North East and they said they wanted me to
be back. Football is one thing, but being healthy is more important. At
times like that, you saw where the football family is.
“The reception from Newcastle’s fans was unbelievable. It was a long
wait so it was emotional. I have to say thanks for all their support
they have sent me."
