Laurent Blanc has urged his Paris Saint-Germain players not to react to the antics of "provocative" Chelsea striker Diego Costa in Wednesday's Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge.
With
the first leg of their last-16 tie at the Parc des Princes having ended
1-1, the pressure is on
PSG to score in west London in order to have
any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.
However, Blanc
has no doubt about his side's ability to play with patience. He is more
concerned with how they handle Costa, who has proven just as
inflammatory a character at Chelsea as he was at former club Atletico
Madrid.
"We know him very well," the PSG coach told reporters on Tuesday. "He changed club, championship, and mentality too.
"But he loves contact. He is provocative; it is his style. So, we have to be calm."
Indeed,
while Blanc remains buoyed by the fact that PSG had the better of the
first leg, the former sweeper says that they have no intention of going
on the attack right from the first whistle at Stamford Bridge.
"We
know that this Chelsea team can do much better than they showed in
Paris," he said. "I found that PSG were better than Chelsea on the
night. But Chelsea may also be better than PSG [on Wednesday].
"The onus is on us to do everything to score, but we must be be intelligent. We must be solid, at first, and then be offensive.
"A win against Chelsea would certainly change PSG's image at European level - and even at French level.
"But
we still have to go and do it. Chelsea have a slight advantage. We know
what to do, though: we have to score at least one goal."
Meanwhile,
Blanc confirmed that PSG's players will wear black armbands against
Chelsea in honour of the eight French nationals and two Argentines that
died in a helicopter crash in Argentina on Tuesday.
"I
am the representative of Paris Saint-Germain this afternoon to present
our sincere condolences to the families of the 10 victims," he said.
"French sport is in mourning. Tomorrow night, at the request of the club, we will have a black armband."
