Really sad one as Thegoalmac can reveal that Atletico Madrid have issued a statement condemning the violence that resulted in the death of a man after Sunday's match with Deportivo La Coruna.
Spanish news service Efe claims "a mass brawl" between fans from the rival clubs took place near the Vicente Calderon on Sunday morning.
Football is a game of fun and entertainment, violence should be discouraged by every fan around as its never an answer to anything. May the soul of the departed fan rest in peace. Continue for more details after the cut.
Twelve supporters were wounded before Atletico's 2-0 win, with one
Depor fan reportedly hit in the head and thrown into the river.
Spanish sports daily Marca claim the man, who is in his
early 30s, suffered a cardiac arrest but was quickly attended to by
emergency personnel. However, Madrid's Hospital Clinico confirmed after
full-time that emergency treatment was unsuccessful and that the
supporter had died.
A statement from Atleti read: "Club Atletico de Madrid strongly
condemns the incidents that occurred in the area of Madrid Rio in the
hours prior to the match that our team will play against Deportivo de La
Coruna.
"The values promoted by sport must prevail over any rivalry and we must fight together against the scourge of violence."
The Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP), which runs the Primera
Division, claimed they tried to get the match cancelled due to the
violence but to no avail.
"The LFP condemns incidents in Madrid on Sunday morning and was
steadfast in its intention to suspend the game, but it has has not been
possible," it said in a statement.
The Spanish government's Sports Council, the Consejo Superior de
Deportes, also announced on Twitter that an emergency anti-violence
committee meeting would be held on Monday morning in response to the
tragic chaos in Madrid.
Efe reports two people have been arrested by the National
Police, who have identified an additional 30 fans as being responsible
for violence.
