Thegoalmac can reveal that Nathaniel Clyne's late strike salvaged a 1-1 draw for a below par Southampton side away to Aston Villa
on Monday night, extending the hosts' winless run to eight games and
leaving Chelsea six points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Though the visiting side dictated the opening exchanges, it was Paul
Lambert's men who struck the first blow; a hopeful long ball forward
forced Fraser Forster to dash from his area but he was beaten to the
ball by the electric pace of Gabriel Agbonlahor, who was able to finish
into an unguarded net.
Southampton pushed forward in search of an equaliser and finally found
it with time running out. Left-back Ryan Bertrand raced towards the
byline and pulled the ball back for Clyne, who lashed a fierce shot past
an otherwise excellent Brad Guzan to deny Lambert victory in his 100th
game in charge of Villa.
