Ancelotti: Ronaldo revelling in Real Madrid pace

Carlo Ancelotti says Cristiano Ronaldo is revelling in the increased pace of Real Madrid’s attacking play in their 3-0 victory over Eibar on Saturday.

The Portugal international opened the scoring in the 21st minute, ending a run of 56 free kicks without finding the net - his last one for the Blancos came against Bayern Munich at the end of April 2014 in the Champions League.

He has now hit seven Liga goals in six days after grabbing five in the 9-1 demolition of Granada and another in the 2-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday.

“Ronaldo is really enjoying the play because the team is now playing with more speed, and that gives him more chances in front of goal," Ancelotti told reporters. "The team's improved and we are making more opportunities.”

Real visit city rivals Atletico Madrid for their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday in what will be their fourth match in nine days, but Ancelotti said he was right not to rest Ronaldo for the clash with Eibar.

"I had thought about giving Cristiano Ronaldo a rest, but I thought he had recovered well after Wednesday's game," he added. "He is always eager to play and to score. That is what makes the difference with other strikers."

On-loan Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez was handed just his second Liga start of the season and took his opportunity to impress by heading the second, though Ancelotti refused to commit to keeping the Mexican beyond his season-long loan.

“He enjoyed his opportunity and has done very well because he has scored. He worked very hard and came close to scoring another,” said Ancelotti.

“But he is still owned by Manchester United and we will have to see what happens at the end of season.”
